What You Should Be Looking For When Buying Clothing
December 15, 2022

For several years, my girlfriend has been going shopping with me.

You’d think she would have grown tired of it by now, but in all honesty, I’m not so sure that’s even possible. She loves to shop for clothes almost as much as I do [yes, this is where the jokes go] [and I love you]. If anything might ever kill our relationship, it just might be shopping for clothes together. So why do I keep dragging her along?

In addition to being cheap and having a pretty good taste (she claims), her presence helps make my experience more enjoyable and less lonely. On top of that, she does an excellent job at finding great deals on clothing and/ or helping me identify clothing that looks like it might be of high quality.

Aside from all these qualities, one thing I’ve noticed is that she always pays close attention to the details of the clothes we’re looking at [and I love you]. There’s a 100% chance she’ll notice if there’s anything wrong with the garment, such as damaged stitching, discoloration, missing buttons, etc. When she notices these details and informs me about them, my mind starts racing: “What happened here?” I immediately begin thinking back to every instance where this piece was worn and displayed. If someone had tried something in-store and stained it, I want to know. Someone had better be taking their job seriously if they’re going to be around clothing all day long.

I’ve always been a fan of the scotch guard.

This approach has been especially helpful in the case of suits and shoes. The last thing you want is your nice pair of dress shoes or that new suit that just got delivered by UPS to have any water damage. In these cases, having someone there who knows what to look for makes it possible to continue being comfortable. To give you an idea about how much this aspect can matter, I recommend checking out “Scott’s Recommends: Shoemoney’s Guide to Buying Shoes.” He talks about why it’s important to check your shoes thoroughly before putting them on and how to make sure your shoes are protected from water damage. By the way, if you need an excellent shoe shine service in LA, I highly recommend TrueFacet.

The point is this:

My girlfriend has some great skills that help me get what I want when shopping for clothing. I can’t imagine how much more difficult it would be for me to try and do this without her there. If you’re looking for clothes on a budget but don’t have someone willing to go with you, here’s my advice: Get out of the house and find yourself a friend who likes clothes as much as you do so they’ll at least keep you company while you shop. Even if they can’t help much or offer any insight into the clothing you’re looking at, they will be able to help you pass the time. I can’t stress how important this is because shopping for clothes might very well be my favorite hobby. It’s not something I’d like to do alone; it’s too boring.
