Choosing the right type of pet for your family is important when you are ready to bring a new addition to your home.
Many different types of pets can be purchased in pet stores; however, choosing the right one will depend on the age and temperament of each person in your family. It might even be helpful to take out an animal encyclopedia or go online to search about different animals that might catch your interest.
Today’s most popular pets range from dogs, cats, reptiles, rodents, birds, and fish. Each with its pros and cons. Here are some things to consider when selecting the best type of pet for your family:
- The ages of children who live in the home.
- The amount of time you have to care for the pet each day.
- Food and supplies are needed to keep the animal happy and healthy.
- Whether or not your family can handle any medical emergencies that may arise with certain types of animals.
- Pets that are allowed in your county, state, province, or country (this will depend on where you live).
- What type of temperament you’re looking for in a pet (do you want an active, passive, or aggressive animal?).
- How much room there is in your house to accommodate the type of pet you choose. For example, large dogs need more space than smaller dogs.
- The cost of a pet.
Dogs:
Dogs can be a great addition to any family; however, they require a lot of time to take care of them. They also need to have regular vet check-ups and be allowed plenty of exercises every day. If you have kids, it might be best not to get a high-energy breed to avoid accidental injury in your home (i.e., knocking over an infant with their tail).
Cats:
Cats are more independent than dogs and don’t require as much attention or exercise as dogs. However, cats still need affection, food, water daily, and proper medical care when necessary.
Reptiles:
Reptiles are scaly, cold-blooded animals, including lizards, turtles, and snakes. Some reptiles can grow very large (i.e., Burmese python), which might require a larger tank than what would house smaller animals.
Rodents:
Rats, hamsters, or guinea pigs are all types of rodents. They generally do not get along with other rodents, so it is best to keep them separate if you have more than one animal of the same species.
Birds:
Birds can bring joy and laughter into your home, but they also come with their own set of challenges. Not only do birds need clean cages every day, but they also require fresh food and water every day, as well as plenty of attention from their owners.
Fish:
Fish are low-maintenance pets that only require an aquarium and the occasional water changes. But fish come in many different varieties, which might make it difficult to find one who matches your personality (i.e., do you want a flashy fish or something more calm?). Also, certain types of fish, like goldfish, may not live as long as other fish because they grow quite large during their life cycle.
